Project Update from Sharon Schattgen: April 2011
The Student Growth Pilot Project is officially off and running! During March and early April, I met with over 800 project participants at a series of 11 regional orientation meetings.
At each orientation meeting, we discussed the project’s objectives, activities and timelines. We also focused on the numerous professional-development opportunities that will help participating educators interpret and use MAP growth data.
A special thanks go to staff members in the Columbia, Forsyth, Joplin, Kansas City, Maryville, Scott City, South Shelby, St. Louis, Webster Groves, and West Plains School Districts for the support they gave the project by hosting these meetings.
Department staff and University of Missouri project partners are currently preparing for the upcoming Spring 2011 release of growth data for participating students, buildings and districts. And, of course, members of the project’s Steering Committee continue to provide guidance and oversight for this work.
Please email me if you have any questions about the project. Continue to watch this site for monthly updates on our progress.

Program Description
The Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has initiated a timely and important project to pilot measures of student growth in achievement. The Department is conducting this pilot project in order to learn more about the policies and procedures required to accurately report and appropriately use valid and reliable student growth data.
This two-year pilot began in the fall of 2010 and will conclude in the fall of 2012. The pilot project will initially focus on growth at the building and district levels. During the second year, the project will expand to report growth data for participating classrooms. All Missouri school districts will be invited to participate in the pilot, although selected statistical analyses will be conducted using results from a representative sample of schools in order to be able to generalize to the larger school population.
Representatives from the Missouri School Boards Association, Missouri Association of School Administrators, Missouri Association of Elementary School Principals, Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals, Missouri Department of Higher Education, the Governor's office, Missouri American Federation of Teachers, Missouri National Education Association, Missouri State Teachers Association, and Missouri Parent-Teacher Association will provide oversight and guidance for the project and serve as the project steering committee.
