Salary:                          $ 26,148.00 minimum annually (depending on prior experience and credentials)

DEFINITION:           This is a school-term, professional position teaching students who are blind, visually impaired, multi-handicapped and deaf-blind.


QUALIFICATIONS DESIRABLE CANDIDATES SHOULD POSSESS
(Other qualifications and experience, which in the opinion of the Commissioner of Education
meet the requirements of the position may be accepted in lieu of the following.)


1.   Bachelor’s or Master’s degree preferred from an accredited college or university with specialization in Orientation and Mobility.

  1. Current certification in O&M issued by ACVREP or be eligible to take exam to be certified.

 

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

 

1.                  Considerable knowledge of modern practices, techniques and methods of teaching, particularly as this applies to the area of education for the blind and visually impaired.

2.                  Ability to assess the needs of students and develop programs accordingly.

3.                  Ability to work effectively with students.

4.                  Ability to make accurate observations.

5.                  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, peers, residential staff, related services staff and parents and collaborative relationships with other agencies and school programs.

           

EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED

 

  1. Serve as part of a multi-disciplinary team to determine O&M eligibility for students with visual impairments.
  2. Design and provide specialized instruction to each assigned student in the school building, community, and in a dormitory setting.
  3. Work cooperatively with classroom teachers, on-site staff, parents and student to implement modifications and accommodations as specified on the IEP.
  4. Track and document student progress on IEP goals and communicate progress to all members of the IEP team, including parents, on a regular basis including quarterly progress reports.

                             BENEFITS
                    (For a Full-Time Position)
 

VACATION: Generally accrue 15 days a year for beginning employees.

 

SICK LEAVE:  Generally accrue 15 days a year.

 

HOLIDAYS:  12 holidays per year.

 

RETIREMENT:  Vested after five years of creditable service.

 

LIFE INSURANCE:  One times employee’s annual salary ($15,000 minimum) in basic life insurance coverage provided at no cost.

 

OPTIONAL LIFE INSURANCE:  Employee may purchase up to 6 times their annual salary.  Spouse and children’s coverage is also available.

 

HEALTH PLANS:  Employer-paid/subsidized plans available the first of the month after employment.

 

DENTAL PLANS:  Several plans are available. Certain areas of the state only:  Employee may pay through payroll deduction.

 

MENTAL HEALTH PLAN:  Up to six counseling visits per family per year.

 

TAX DEFERRED PLANS:  State contributes $25 to eligible employees after 12 continuous months of employment.
