    Missouri LifeSmarts JV and Varsity Teams Recognized

Governor Proclaims April Youth Economic and Financial Literacy Month

Governor Matt Blunt signed a Proclamation declaring April 2008 to be Youth Economic and Financial Literacy Month. Participating in the signing were the Missouri LifeSmarts Junior Varsity and Varsity championship teams.

LifeSmarts is a student competition that includes the topics of personal finance and consumer rights and responsibilities. It is sponsored in Missouri by American Century Investments and the Missouri Association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA).

The Junior Varsity team is from Camdenton and is coached by Mary Beth Otto. Mary Beth is a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Camdenton Middle School. Twenty eight junior varsity teams from all over the state participated in the first year of Junior Varsity competition for students in grades 6-8. The “Laker Ottopilots 8” prevailed to win against five other finalists in Jefferson City on February 26.

The Varsity team is from Maysville. One hundred Missouri varsity teams joined the 2008 online competition. Coached by Family and Consumer Sciences teacher Kathy Kagay, the “Savvy Consumers” earned the Missouri title on February 27. They placed fifth at the national competition in Minneapolis in April.
