Putnam County FBLA at S.O.A.R. program

Earlier this year, students from the FBLA chapter at Putnam County High School brought the RACE Into Reading project to the local S.O.A.R. afterschool program.  After reading a book together about all the different things children could grow up to be, small groups of elementary students rotated to different stations to read more books about various careers that fit into the six Career Paths.  When they finished, they received the RACE cards and stickers, pencils, bookmarks, and a pin.  "It was a big hit.  Overall, the kids and FBLA students really enjoyed RACE Into Reading and we plan on doing it again next year," said business teacher Kathy Lorensen.

RACE Into Reading logoRACE Into Reading - Reading About Career Experiences is an interactive school/community service project between Missouri CTSO members and elementary students that promotes reading for fun and information.  Participation in the project allows elementary students to learn about a variety of career opportunities and allows the CTSO RACE Into Reading postermember to develop leadership skills and serve as a positive role model for elementary students.  The project is sponsored through Missouri Career Education and Missouri's Career and Technical Student Organizations - DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, FFA, HOSA, SkillsUSA, and TSA.

RACE Into Reading projects may also be a part of the service-learning opportunities and before and after school childcare programs.  Tying the projects to a school/community need and collaboration between staff can provide additional leadership development opportunities for CTSO members.
