Two teams from Missouri DECA chapters earned the opportunity to compete in the international Virtual Business Challenge-Retailing at the DECA International Career Development Conference to be held this April in Atlanta, Ga.
Geoffry Sumter and Katie Clear, seniors at Warrensburg High School, placed first in the Central Region and second in the nation in the virtual competition. The contest ended in December. Cheryl Yung, DECA advisor, will accompany them to the conference.
Sumter and Clear, also known as "Woosh Woosh," placed second in the nation out of 1,230 teams that participated in the first round. They had to manage the pricing and storefront ads for a convenience store on-line. They were ranked according to highest cumulative profit. When finished, they had to e-mail their file to confirm they were national qualifiers.
Sumter and Clear were recognized by the Warrensburg R-VI School Board at its December meeting and will receive a certificate of recognition at the DECA State Career Development Conference at the Lodge of Four Seasons in March.
Clear is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jim Clear, and Sumter is the son of Mr. and Mrs. George Sumter.
In addition to the Clear and Sumter team, a Warrenton High School team qualified to attend the 2008 DECA International Career Development Conference. Cody Frazier, Deric Bennett, and Matt Neiderer placed second in the Central Region. Their high standing earned them the opportunity to also compete for scholarship money. Their DECA advisor is Margarett Kernell.

High school DECA members can compete via the Internet during two qualifying rounds with the National Champion being determined in the spring at the International Career Development Conference in Atlanta. Players will compete against each other using a Multiplayer format. The top two teams from each of four regions of the United States — Central, North Atlantic, Southern and Western — qualify for Nationals.
"These students should not only be proud of their accomplishments, but they should also be commended for their initiative to participate in the on-line event that relates to the marketing curriculum," said Christopher Young, Missouri DECA state advisor.
