Guidance and Placement Goals

A goal of the Guidance and Placement Services Section in the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has been, and will continue to be, maintaining a strong collaboration, partnership and liaison with: professional organizations such as the Missouri School Counselors Association (MSCA), Missouri Association for Career Services (MACS); practitioner groups; counselor educators at the thirteen colleges and universities within the state offering state approved counselor education programs; and the continued leadership at the state level. By doing this, we all can work cooperatively on mutual endeavors.

We will continue our efforts to enhance the role of the professional school counselor by continuing to work toward the decrease in non-guidance activities that counselors at all levels are given so that the counselors can direct their efforts toward enhancing students’ personal/social, academic, and career development. We also need to continue to provide leadership and assistance in the development of materials and resources to assist educators. Our goal is to provide a framework for improving the effectiveness of elementary, secondary and post-secondary counselors, counselor education programs, and the supervision and administration of comprehensive guidance programs.

CURRENT GOALS

To continue guidance curriculum development
To develop a needs survey based on new standards
To develop a mentoring program for Placement/Areas Schools
To formalize the mentoring program with MSCA and establish a working model
To evaluate/expand relationships with Workforce Investment Boards (WIB’s)
To connect with Regional Professional Development Centers (RPDC’s) and developing a working relationship to benefit counselors
To continue the refinement of guidance program evaluation
To develop a grant to evaluate guidance program effectiveness
To continue the development of web-based career information management system
To continue the enhancement of the career path concept through the implementation of career clusters and career majors

ON-GOING

To provide high quality in service programs for teachers, counselors, and administrators
To assist in the development of effective resource materials for the implementation of a comprehensive guidance program
To develop and maintain meaningful collaborative relationships with state and national professional organizations that promote and advocate for strong guidance programs, successful schools, and high student achievement
To respond quickly and accurately to counselors, teachers, administrators, parents, and others who have questions or concerns regarding guidance and placement
To continue to update and revise the comprehensive model’s content standards, processes and activities as needed
