Directions for Text Preview Chart
§ Students skim the passage by reading the title and the first sentence of each paragraph.
§ During the skimming process, students complete the Text Preview Chart graphic organizer by writing words and phrases that are clues about the topic and author’s viewpoint.
§ Students determine the purpose for reading the passage.

Questions and Strategies |
In discussion and directions, use the terms: “preview,” “predict,” and “set a purpose for reading” with the students to “name” the activity and encourage meta-cognition (conscious intellectual activity including thinking, reasoning, remembering, imagining). These terms are often used in the formative and summative assessments. |
