LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

1.        Students recall times when they have had difficulty following written directions.  A list of responses may be written on the chalkboard or poster.

 

Questions for Students

 

Have you ever been worried or upset when you had trouble following written directions at school?  Why?

What could have been changed to make the directions more understandable?

 

2.        Teacher models the step-by-step approach of following a set of written directions using the Written Directions handout. 

 

Questions for Students

 

What did you notice about my behavior as I read the directions?

Why do you suppose I read the directions completely through one time, then, went back and read them through one-by-one (step-by-step) to complete the task?

 

3.        Work with the  library media specialist for a lesson about alphabetizing used in the library.  In particular, discuss authors’ names in fiction.

 

4.        Provide students copies of the Alphabetizing handout, and six people cutouts.
