LEARNING ACTIVITIES

1.        Discuss with students the purpose of the entire genre study.  Remind students expository writing explains how to do something.

2.        Discuss the author’s celebration.  Explain students will share their expository writing with peers and invited guests.

3.        Discuss with students the kinds of props if any to use during their presentation.  Remind students it is their responsibility to bring props from home.  Send a note to parents explaining this.

§         If the presentation is how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, students may bring in the materials while an “assistant” performs the steps as they read their writing.

4.        Introduce the checklist on which students are assessed and discuss each item.

Idea

Using the Author’s Celebration Invitation handout example, direct students to create an invitation to their parents to attend the Author’s Celebration.
