FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Make mental notes to be recorded later of students’ attentiveness during the activity. At the end of this lesson, record your observations of students who named a character or the problem of the story. Notes from this observation and others can be used to rate each student using the checklist at the end of this unit.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Gather in read-aloud area and gain attention of students by using a class signal.
2. Ask the students, “Who is the author/illustrator of The Mitten?”
3. Read the story. Stop and discuss the story as you read.

4. List all of the characters on chart paper. Use the masks, plastic animals or paper animals to review the list of characters.
5. Show students the large mitten. Discuss how during the next lesson we will act out the story.
