LESSON 3A: Re-enact - The Mitten

 

Using The Mitten, encourage students to respond to the text.  Students re-enact The Mitten. This lesson may take two or three days.

 

GRADE LEVEL EXPECTATIONS

 

R1E: Develop vocabulary by listening to and discussing unknown words in stories.

R1H: Develop and demonstrate with assistance, post-reading skills after reading or read-alouds to respond to text: questions to clarify, retell, illustrate, and re-enact stories.

LS1A: Listen for enjoyment, for information, and for simple directions, with teacher assistance.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT

Make mental notes to be recorded later of students’ participation during the activity.  At the end of this lesson, record your observations of students’ ability to re-enact the story. Notes from this observation and others can be used to rate each student using the checklist at the end of this unit.


LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

1.        Gather in the read-aloud area and gain attention of students by using a class signal.

 

2.        Discuss that we are going to act out the story today but first we are going to reread the story.

 

3.        Reread the story. Stop and discuss unfamiliar words such as: diggers, kickers, prickle, jostled, muzzle, etc.

What does tunneling along mean?

What picture do you see in your head when you hear me read tunneling or borrow inside?

What does wiggled mean?

What would big kickers be?

What is snuffling, jostled, etc.?

How would you act that out?

 

4.        Show students the animals (masks, plastic animals, etc) and the large mitten. Give students an opportunity to choose a part to play.

 

5.        Students act out the story with props while you read the book.
