FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Make mental notes to be recorded later of students’ participation during the activity. At the end of this lesson, record your observations of students’ development to hear and say separate sounds in words and/ or awareness that a string of letters represent a word. Notes from this observation and others can be used to rate each student using the checklist at the end of this unit.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Gather in the read-aloud area and gain attention by using a class signal.
2. Use the chart created in the previous lesson. Review that at makes the /at/ sound and usually when you see it in a word you will say /at/.

Questions for Students |
What is this word? What sound do you hear at the end of this word?
|
3. Review how you created words in the previous lesson with the cards or cubes. Explain to students that they will make words with the cards or cubes in small groups.
4. Explain to students the expectations on how to work in small groups to create “at” words and how to record the words they create on paper or on white boards.
5. In small groups students make words with the cards or cubes. Give each group several “at “ index cards or cubes and several cards or cubes with consonant letters. Students make words out of the cards or cubes.
6. Gathering back in a large group, students share some of the words they created in their small groups. Write on chart paper to hang in the classroom as a resource. Chant words as you highlight the “at” in each word.
