LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  1. Prior to the student’s opening today’s text, read aloud the beginning paragraph containing information about the small and large intestine. (Stopping point from previous lesson).

  1. Omit the sentence that reads: It is about twenty-one feet long. Place students in small groups of four-five. Each group of students makes a prediction concerning the length of the entire intestines. Each group cuts off a length of string representing their prediction. Display and discuss these predictions.

  1. Give students the information to determine the actual length of their own intestines, 3 1/2  times the length of this child. Ask one student to model this to the class. Measure the student and cut a link of string that is

3 1/ times the length of this child Note: if time allows, all students might enjoy this activity.

Questions

for

Students

How do you think 21 feet of intestines fits inside the body?

Have you ever seen an x-ray of your body?

  1. Develop new vocabulary words relating to digestion using the ABC Activity Guide. Reread the text aloud that begins: There are two intestines in your body…

Strategy

Model the appropriate way to use an ABC Activity Guide using an overhead or large chart paper. Write a word that is from the text and related to digestion. New words or interesting words are added on the line for their initial letter.

For example, model words such as small intestine, large intestine, and tube.

  1. Students finish reading the text and add four-five words to the ABC Guide. Note: students do not have to fill in all the blanks on the ABC Activity Guide.

  1. Develop new vocabulary words relating to digestion using the Vocabulary Square Activity Sheet. Students choose one word off the ABC Activity Guide. Model this activity on an overhead using the term “intestine”.

Strategy

Vocabulary Square

Teacher assistance may be needed in the definition box of the Vocabulary Square Activity Sheet if classroom dictionaries have multiple meanings.

Option: in the same box, have students write the guidewords from the top of the dictionary page where the word is found instead of them writing the definition.
