Students study the use of media and effectiveness of media messages.

IL2A The student will be able to analyze and evaluate the effect various elements of media have on the message such as videos, pictures, websites, artwork, plays, news programs.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Students evaluate the effectiveness of the message in two media. Use the provided graphic organizer or create a graphic organizer to compare and contrast the two messages. Scoring guide provided.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Show painting, “The Scream.” Ask what effect it has and why.

Questions for Students |
What do you first notice about the picture? What do you think is happening? What is the artist implying through the cartoon? After reading the editorial, what is the main point? What supporting information does he or she use? What audience might the cartoonist be trying to reach? What audience might the editorial writer be trying to reach? Why do you think the writer and cartoonist chose the type of media to communicate the message? Which do you think is most effective for getting the message across to the chosen audience? Why? |
2. Review elements and ask for examples of each. Using provided example, read a newspaper editorial and show a political cartoon with the same message. Which do you think is better and why?
