Read the following passage.

Life Under Slavery

Slave Codes

Most Southern states had laws that shaped the day-to-day lives of enslaved people.  These laws were called slave codes.  Under these codes slaves were not allowed to leave their owners’ land, to meet in groups, or to buy or sell goods.  Most were not allowed to learn to read and write.  They were treated as property, and few were given any special privileges.

Treatment of Slaves

Slaves were often treated harshly by their owners. Some slave owners hired people called overseers to watch the slaves as they worked and to punish them if they fell behind.  Slave owners broke up families by selling husbands without their wives, and children without their parents.  They punished enslaved people harshly for disobeying.

“No day ever dawns for the slave, nor is it looked for, “one African of the time wrote.  “For the slave it is all night-all night, forever.”

Survival Techniques

To help themselves survive, many enslaved people formed close-knit communities.  Families, friends, and neighbors helped one another, giving comfort and support.  They talked of what they remembered about Africa or what they had heard about it from others.  They tried to keep their traditions alive.

Religious beliefs gave many enslaved people the strength they needed to handle the hardships of life under slavery.  Some slaves expressed their beliefs by singing spirituals.  Spirituals are religious songs based on Bible stories.
