FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 

Students select a media source and identify the message of the media and explain how the viewpoint was presented.

 

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  1. Students brainstorm how an eyewitness account of a natural disaster and a news reporter might be different in reporting the same event. Share as a large group.

 

  1. Share several examples of media (see Communication Arts Glossary) and review point-of-view.  Use a think aloud strategy to identify the message and viewpoint:

(a)                 1st Person – Inside the action; eyewitness account

(b)                 3rd Person – Outside the action; news reporter

  1. Present different types of media to each group and have groups respond to the following:

1)                   What is the message?

2)                   Explain the viewpoint.

 

Each group presents their findings followed by a discussion of messages, viewpoints, and questions.
