LESSON THREE: Evaluate the accuracy of the information and choose research topic
Taking the names they gathered, students place them on the wall. After evaluating the accuracy of the information found, students choose two names to continue researching.
FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT
Students explain, in a one to two paragraph reflective essay, the process they undertook to locate sources, keep track of information, evaluate for accuracy, and make their choice for topic. They should note any difficulties encountered and questions left unanswered.

Students explain, in a one or two paragraph reflective essay, how to locate sources, keep track of information, evaluate for accuracy, and make their topic choice. They should also note any difficulties encountered and unanswered questions. Scoring guide provided.
LEARNING ACTIVITIES
1. Students write the names of the people they found through research on a small piece of paper

Use stickie notes, index cards, or other small pieces of paper that could easily be hung up after students write the names found from Lesson Two research activity. |
2. Students place their stickie notes or index cards in the appropriate category that the teacher has labeled on construction paper.
3. Once all names are posted, students evaluate whether names are in the right categories. The teacher guides this process through class discussion.
4. Ask students the following questions:

How many of you found the same names? Are there names that are different? Why the similarities and differences? How did you find the names? What can you conclude or infer about our results? |
5. Students work in small groups to eliminate repeated names.
6. When completed, students select two names of people they would like to continue researching. Students may choose names from different categories; for instance, a name from Hero and one from Public Service.
7. After choosing two names, students write a one or two paragraph reflective essay. The essay explains the process used to locate sources, keep track of information, evaluate for accuracy, and select a topic. They should also note difficulties encountered and questions left unanswered.
