Discuss how many books have a glossary in the back of the book. Show several books that have a glossary. Review the features: (1) words are in alphabetical order, (2) parts of speech are given in parenthesis, and (3) definitions are stated. Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock does not have a glossary. A glossary will be made for it.
Review parts of speech: n. = noun, v. = verb, adj. = adjective, adv. = adverb
Divide the class into five groups. Give one word and an empty sentence strip to each group. Instruct the students to identify the part of speech and their word and put the abbreviation of the part of speech in the parenthesis. On the rest of the sentence, write the definition.
