Students look at advertisements to gain knowledge about media messages and apply skills to an illustration from a tall tale.

Students use the illustration of the cemetery (the death of Johnny’s mother and brother) to have students infer the message and complete the Media Message Web handout.

The advertisements are to be used to examine the illustrations, not to focus on the verbage provided by the advertiser. The text will not be read until Lesson Six, but will be used for visual purposes only. |

Write examples of visual details from the illustrations (i.e., the still water, smiling faces, soft light, fluffy clouds, non-threatening stance of animals and people) which support the intended message. |
