Students complete the Root Tree Independent Practice Sheet.

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

  1. Read aloud sections of Paul Bunyan or the title used in Lesson One. Review the components of a tall tale. Discuss the definition of the word “affix” and give examples.

Info

Definition of affix: one or more sounds or letters attached to the beginning or end of a base word. Refer to Suffixes/Prefixes Chart handout of common affixes or use a reference from your own resources to guide students in their understanding of the effect of an affix on a root word.

  1. Use words from the text to model separating the root word from the affixes. Students identify words in the text which have affixes.

Questions

     for

Students

What is the difference between a prefix and suffix?

Does breaking a word down to its root help you understand the meaning of the word? How?

What is a root word?

What effect does an affix have on the meaning of the word?

  1. Student play Pass the Parts to strengthen their knowledge of root words and affixes.

Explanation of Pass the Parts

§         Copy and cut apart one set of the Pass the Parts Activity Cards.

§         Give one card to each student. If there is an odd number of cards, pair a student with another or let that student be the “expert” and help other students as they begin to group.

§         Students read their card and decide whether they have a prefix, root word, or suffix.

§         Students move around the room and find another student who has a card that can be added to theirs to create a word.

§         Once students have a match they stay with their partner for class sharing.

§         During sharing, students use the word in a complete sentence and explain how the addition of the affix changes the meaning of the root word.

§         Students remix and share again.

  1. Use the Root Tree Guided Practice Sheet as a transparency to model how to use affixes to decode the meaning of unfamiliar words.

Explanation of the Root Tree Guided Practice Sheet

  • Make an overhead of the Root Tree Guided Practice Sheet.
  • Students read the sentence from the Root Tree Guided Practice Sheet.
  • Students identify the root word of untouched.
  • Write touch at the base of the tree trunk
  • Students make new words using the root word touch by adding new affixes and write the new words on the tree branches.
  • In pairs, students explain how the definition of affixes alters the meaning of the root word.

Examples: retouch, untouchable, touching, touched, touchy, etc.
