Lesson Three |
Student will develop and utilize comprehension strategies during reading, will identify relevant information and record main ideas and important details in own words and will identify concepts and ideas in written text to complete an organizer. § Literature: Pecos Bill by Steven Kellogg § Supplies: The Main Man overhead transparency § Handouts: The Main Man graphic organizer § Formative Assessment: Students complete The Main Man graphic organizer after reading a tall tale. Students may select a different main idea as long as they are able to support the main idea. |

Lesson Four |
Student will apply decoding strategies to problem solve unknown words and will develop vocabulary through text using root words, affixes, synonyms, antonyms, context clues, glossary, and dictionary. § Literature: John Henry by Ezra Jack Keats § Supplies: markers § Handouts: Vocabulary Square graphic organizer, New Word Strategies Checklist § Formative Assessment: Students complete the Vocabulary Square graphic organizer. |

Lesson Five |
Student will identify and explain the intended messages conveyed through oral and visual media. § Literature: Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg § Supplies: markers, current print advertisements, overhead projector § Handouts: Media Message Web § Formative Assessment: Students use an illustration to infer the message and complete the Media Message Web. |

Student will identify relevant information, to record main ideas and important details in own words. § Literature: Johnny Appleseed and Pecos Bill by Steven Kellogg § Supplies: overhead projector, markers § Handouts: Story Pyramid (overhead transparency and student copies) § Formative Assessment: Students complete the Story Pyramid graphic organizer using the story Johnny Appleseed by Steven Kellogg or other tall tale. |
