LESSON DESCRIPTION

Students apply decoding strategies to problem-solve unknown words when reading, develop vocabulary through text using root words, affixes and context clues and determine meanings of new words through various strategies.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT 

Using the prefix/suffix chart provided, students create their own nonsense word from familiar roots and put each word in a sentence or brief paragraph context that explains the word’s meaning.  Scoring guide provided.

 

LEARNING ACTIVITIES

 

1.        Using a free writing prompt or DOL question containing an unfamiliar word, students write down what they think the word means.

Using Jabberwocky, students discuss how the position of the word part, part of speech of the word, and context clues help determine word meaning. Students revise basic parts of speech and their placement in sentences. Students discuss etymology and evaluate the changes in word meaning.
