POSITION TITLE: Director of Media Services

QUALIFICATIONS: The Director shall have a Master’s Degree in Library Science and a valid teaching certificate. A strong background in computer technology is recommended. He/she should be able to work effectively with members of the instructional staff, have an understanding of curriculum development, understand supervisory organization and techniques, and be aware of instructional trends and innovations.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Associate Superintendent for Instruction

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 Month

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director will assume the responsibility for the system-wide coordination of all library/media and computer services. The overall purpose of this position is to promote the effective use of media by the students, administration, and instructional staff so that the education objectives can be accomplished. Programs which are cooperatively planned and staffed ensure a wise expenditure of funds and effective use of manpower while still honoring the inherent right of the individual school to develop its own instructional media program. He/she will work in a staff relationship with library/media personnel, AV and instructional technology staff, and computer coordinators. Within the school building unit, the media director shall assist the principal in the improvement of media and computer services.

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Organizations:

  1. Assesses needs and develops long-range plan for District and building level library media and computer program.

  2. Develops District policies and procedures designed to accomplish program goals and objectives.

  3. Recommends appropriate staff, facilities, instructional materials, and equipment.

  4. Provides technical, financial, managerial, and advisory support to building media and computer programs, such as cataloging and processing, equipment repair, needs assessment, budgeting guidelines, and the production and copying of some types of materials.

  5. Coordinates the operation of the District and building level library media and computer programs.

  6. Evaluates library media and computer programs and makes recommendations for their improvement.

  7. Performs other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Associate Superintendent.

Personnel Management

  1. Participates in the recruitment, hiring, and deployment of library and computer staff.

  2. Assists principal in the supervision and evaluation of library media and computer staff.

Instructional Development

  1. Serves as a member of the District’s curriculum development team in the planning and implementation of the K-12 instructional program.

  2. Establishes an on-going program of in-service education for teachers on the use of instructional materials, including computers and other forms of technology.

  3. Serves as a resource consultant to department, curriculum committees, and other professional staff in the selection and purchase of media and equipment.

  4. Coordinates use of community and other non-school resources for instructional purposes.

  5. Develops and coordinates a program of library media skills instruction for all students.

  6. Develops and coordinates a program of computer literacy instruction for all students.

  7. Provide direction in the evaluation, selection, and implementation of new technology.

Communication

  1. Interprets and promotes the library media and computer programs and services to teachers, administrators, Board of Education, and the community.

  2. Provides official reports and studies pertaining to library media and educational technology, as needed by the Director.

  3. Maintains liaison with other community media resources.

Staff Development

  1. Explores and evaluates current developments and innovations in the fields of instructional media and technology.

  2. Inform the media staff of developments, studies, research, standards, legislation, and in-service opportunities in educational media and technology.

  3. Establishes a program of orientation for new library media personnel.

  4.  

  5. Establishes a continuous program of in-service education for all library media staff.

  6. Facilitates and encourages communication amount the library media staff members.

EVALUATION: By Associate Superintendent for Instruction during the initial employment and every two years thereafter.
