LIBRARY MEDIA SPECIALIST

 

JOB TITLE: Library Media Specialist

REPORT TO: Building Principal & Director of Library Media Services

RESPONSIBILITIES: To plan for the print and non-print components of a technologically-rich library media program and to assist in the supervision of the media center support staff, student staff, and volunteers. As the leader in building media services, library media specialist assist in the general management and administration of the media center, the instructional process, develop interpersonal relationships, and assume professional responsibility. The characteristics are identified and described in the "Performance Based Library Media Specialist Evaluation."

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate leadership in building the library media program using above average skills in communication, curriculum development and teaching strategies.

  • Involve administrators and teachers in budgeting, program planning and collection development.

  • Provide a flexible library media center schedule so that students and staff have unlimited physical and intellectual access to a wide range of materials.

  • Plan special reading promotional programs for students.

  • Support teachers’ efforts in integrating information literacy into the curriculum.

  • Provide access to information resources within and outside the school.

  • Design activities that help students learn to identify, analyze and synthesize information by using a variety of materials and formats.

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers through the process of designing, implementing and evaluating instruction.

  • Provide multi-disciplinary approaches to teaching and learning.

  • Collaborate with teachers in planning the integration of library skills into the K-12 skills curriculum.

  • Cooperatively select appropriate print and non-print material for the level being served.

  • Use telecommunications as a communications and resource tool.

  • Integrate technology as a tool for student and staff learning.

  • Use information technology applications in resource based instruction.

  • Create documents in a variety of computer applications on multiple platforms.

  • Facilitate the use of presentation tools in print, technology, and media.

  • Provide building level orientation and in-service for specific technology found in the media center.

  • Serve as an expert in organizing synthesizing and communicating information about the library media center program to students, staff and parents.

  • Communicate with staff members about new materials, technology, research, and other professional opportunities.

  • Design the library media facility in relationship to programs needs.

  • Demonstrate leadership in professional organizations.
