Answer to Problem 17:

5 + (3 + 4)

DEFINITIONS:

associative property of addition—the sum stays the same when the grouping of the addends is changed.

Example: (5 + 4) +6 = 5 + (4 + 6).[1]

associative property of multiplication—the product stays the same when the grouping of the factors is changed.
Example: (3
´ 4) ´ 7 = 3 ´ (4 ´ 7).[2]

distributive property—when one of the factors of a product is written as a sum, multiplying each addend before adding does not change the product. Example: 3 ´ (5 + 4) = (3 ´ 5) + (3 ´ 4).[3]
