  2. With multiplication a positive and a negative is always negative.  You are adding the same negative integer several times, which will always result in a negative sum.    For example, 3 x –5 means you lose 5 three times or add three sets of –5.
  3.  With multiplication a negative and a negative is a positive.  One way to think of it is that a negative means the opposite, so you are doing the opposite of taking away.  For example, -3 x –5 would be doing the opposite of taking away 5 three times, which would be 15.
