1. 2007 summer reading program start-up kits sent to school libraries The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will be mailing the 2007 statewide summer reading program start-up kits to all Missouri public libraries the week of December 11, 2006. This year, a kit was sent to each librarian in the state rather than each building. Hopefully this will address the issue of duplicates. The 2007 start-up kit contains the program planning manuals for “Get a Clue @ Your Library,” the 2007 children’s program and “YNK @ Your Library,” the 2007 teen program, shrink-wrapped together with two copies of the CD-Rom containing the 2007 art and graphics. Included in the kit, but separate from the manuals, are chapter dividers for each manual.
Also enclosed are copies of the 16-page 2007 Collaborative Summer Library Program order forms. Once again, Highsmith is the vendor for CSLP, so libraries should send merchandise orders directly to Highsmith. To receive materials before April 1, 2007, libraries must order before January 1, 2007. Do your shopping early!

8. Harvard Family research on quality summer programs Harvard Family Research Project's "Issues and Opportunities in Out-of-School Time Evaluation" briefs highlight current research and evaluation work. These documents draw on research in out-of-school time in order to provide practitioners, funders, evaluators, and policymakers with information to help them in their work. The newest research brief, "Summer Success: Challenges and Strategies in Creating Quality Academically Focused Summer Programs" (Number 9, October 2006), synthesizes formative findings from 34 evaluations of academically focused summer programs to examine ways of creating quality programming for youth. Learn about seven common challenges programs face in achieving quality, and discover promising and innovative strategies for overcoming these challenges. Access the brief online at: http://www.gse.harvard.edu/hfrp/projects/afterschool/resources/issuebrief9.html.
