1.  Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® workshops return  -- Missouri youth services staff in public libraries have the opportunity to participate in training that will prepare them to deliver workshops to parents and caregivers on early literacy skills. The Every Child Ready to Read @ your library® training is based on current research on brain development and focuses on providing early literacy information to parents and caregivers of young children. Participants in the training will receive an overview of the Every Child Ready to Read workshops, learn about current research on early literacy development, explore using the workshops to develop new partnerships and have the opportunity to submit a State Library federal grant application to obtain start-up funding to conduct Every Child Ready to Read @ your library@ workshops in the community.

NewsBank - provides full-text news stories from Missouri newspapers, including the St. Louis Post-Dispatch and the Kansas City Star.

 

The online resources listed are provided to MOREnet customers through funding by the Missouri General Assembly. This appropriation is made to the secretary of state's office and is administered by the Missouri State Library.

4.  Confidentiality Policy -- clarification  Student library records are confidential.  They are covered by a state law about library records/confidentiality.  In addition, they are part of the student record; therefore the parent and/or legal guardian may be informed of the titles checked out by the student.  If a parent/legal guardian asks what their student has checked out, you may/must inform them of the titles.

Joe Raiola will present his critically acclaimed program “The Joy of Censorship: A Provocative Program on the First Amendment and the History of MAD Magazine.” Raiola takes an illuminating, offbeat and at times disturbing look at America’s most hotly debated First Amendment issues, including the dramatic effect of Sept. 11 on free speech. He also sheds light on the endless arguments of the Patriot Act, Internet filters, flag burning, movie ratings, banned books, indecency and the true meaning of obscenity.

Are you a new librarian? Just passed the Praxis? Now you are officially a librarian. So what do you do? This workshop will offer some practical tips for the new librarian. What tasks have to be done NOW? Which can wait until next week? Are there any I can do when I get “around 2 it?” Management and Collection Development topics will be discussed and ideas shared.

Best New 2005-2006 Multicultural Literature for Grades 4-8 (J.B. Petty, Cherri Jones and Dea Borneman)
The presenters give short, snappy booktalk/reviews featuring the latest high-quality multicultural titles for grades 4-8. The objective of the session is to acquaint Missouri school librarians with great multicultural titles to add to their collections. An annotated bibliography of the featured books will be distributed at the session. (4-8)

Promoting the Mark Twain Award with a Battle of the Books (Jefferson City Public Schools K-5 Library Media Specialists)
To encourage more voting in the Mark Twain award in our elementary buildings, the Library/Media Specialists developed their own “Battle of the Books”. Last year was the first year to implement the program with great success and plans are already underway for the 2006-2007 school year. This workshop will explain what we are doing and our planning process to encourage other school districts to explore the option. (4-8)
