SUBJECT: Missouri Student Survey, formerly the Safe and Drug-Free Schools Missouri Combined Student Survey
LISTSERVE MESSAGE DATE: January 26, 2012
The Missouri Student Survey is due to be administered during the 2011-2012 school year. It has been a component of the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities program and has been a requirement of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA). The survey is administered every other year (biennially). This year the survey is not required due to the Title IV.A funding being cut from this year’s federal allocations. So that districts do not lose this valuable means of collecting ongoing data regarding local tobacco, drug, and alcohol use, and bullying, mental health, and other information, the Department of Mental Health is paying for the administration of the survey this year. The results are important to your district as you determine local needs and plan prevention activities.
The online survey will be available to schools January 30, 2012 through March 31, 2012. Please plan to include all ninth graders and two additional grades, one of which is an even numbered grade. You may survey all students in grades six through twelve. The Office of Social and Economic Analysis (OSEDA) at the University of Missouri will administer the survey in cooperation with the Missouri Departments of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) and Mental Health. You will soon receive additional details about the survey administration from OSEDA.
Please choose someone in your district to act as the contact person for the survey. This should be someone who can coordinate the survey administration in your district and communicate with OSEDA. Click on the following link and enter the contact information by February 8, 2012. Use the following password to enter the site below: mizzou7

If you have questions regarding survey requirements, you may contact Mary Pearce with DESE at 573-526-4472 or mary.pearce@dese.mo.gov. Questions regarding the survey administration will be handled by OSEDA and included in their information.
We sincerely hope and encourage you to participate in the Missouri Student Survey for the valuable information your district will receive.
