Subject:  “New” Homeless Coordinator’s Workshops

List Service Message Date:  July 8, 2009

The Discretionary Grants’ section will be conducting “New” Homeless Liaison workshops on the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act throughout the state in July and August.  The McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act (Subtitle B—Education for Homeless Children and Youth), reauthorized in January 2002, ensures educational rights and protections for children and youth experiencing homelessness.

Location and times are listed below.  These workshops are designed for district personnel who are new to the field as well as seasoned staff who need a basic refresher.  Workshops will provide participants with an overview of the key provisions of the McKinney-Vento Homeless Assistance Act.  Topics to be discussed include the causes of poverty and exploring how poverty affects children, the basic concepts of the McKinney-Vento Act, the definition of homelessness and how it impacts the various responsibilities of the LEA.

Workshops are  limited to the first 40 registrants however, school districts may have more than one person attend.  An email will be sent to you confirming your registration location.
