Subject: ECSE Parent Education
Source: Missouri School for the Deaf, Resource Center on Deafness
Intended Audience: ECSE Teachers and Special Education Coordinators
Date: September 13, 2006
Deaf and hard of hearing students enrolling in Early Childhood Special
Education (ECSE) are eligible for outreach services through the Missouri
School for the Deaf's Resource Center. Trained parent advisors visit the
student's home on a weekly basis to instruct parents on a variety of issues
that are unique to deaf and hard of hearing children. This instruction is
based on a nationally recognized curriculum (SKI*HI) and includes topics
such as language and communication development, the use of hearing aids,
cochlear implants, etc. These services are listed as related services on the
student's IEP. LEAs will contract with and pay parent advisors directly.
Those costs then will be reimbursed through the district's ECSE budgets.
School districts are encouraged to contact MSD if they know of any families
who may benefit from the program and to be linked to a parent advisor with
whom they may contract for services.
