Subject: MAP-A eligibility

Date:  October 24, 2008

Last week during my webinar, I addressed the issue of MAP-A eligibility and shared with folks that the types of kids I would expect to be MAP-A eligible are those who are severely cognitively impaired. I specifically referenced the level of cognitive ability that serves as the eligibility criteria for our Missouri Schools for the Severely Disabled (formerly SSSH).

I am hearing from the field that some people in the field have misunderstood my comments and believe that only children attending MSSD are eligible to take the MAP-A. I have also heard that some school staff persons incorrectly think that the decision as to which children are eligible for the MAP-A is an administrator decision.

Please remember that the decision on whether an individual student is eligible to take the MAP-A is a decision to be made by the Individualized Education Program (IEP) team. And in general, the team will find a student eligible if they are functioning at a severe cognitive impairment level.
