Family, Career and Community Leaders of America, Inc. (FCCLA) is a nonprofit national career and technical student organization in public and private school through grade 12.

 

Building Strong Leaders

 

Family, Career and Community Leaders of America is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through family and consumer sciences education.  Chapter projects focus on a variety of youth concerns, including teen pregnancy, family relationships, substance abuse, peer pressure, financial literacy, nutrition and fitness, teen violence and career exploration.

 

Program Emphasis

 

FCCLA—

is the only in-school student organization with the family as its central focus.

  • Is a career and technical student organization that functions as an integral part of the family and consumer sciences education curriculum and operates within the school system.
  • Provides opportunities for active student participation at local, state and national levels.

Membership

 

FCCLA has a national membership of over 225,000 young men and women in nearly 7,000 local chapters.  There are 53 state associations including the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. Since its founding in 1945, FCCLA has involved more than nine million youth.

Former members are eligible to become members of Alumni & Associates. Currently, Missouri FCCLA has nearly 14,000 members in 400 local chapters, ranking as the fifth largest FCCLA state association.

Governance

 

Ten national officers (students) are elected by the voting delegates at the annual National Leadership Meeting and together make up the National Executive Council.

Missouri FCCLA is comprised of 13 regional associations.  Each region elects an officer to serve on the State Executive Council.  In addition, an officer to support membership development, an officer to represent occupational membership and national officer candidates are also selected.

 

Financial and Cooperative Support

 

FCCLA is supported primarily by student membership dues.  Additional funds are raised from individuals, corporations and foundations.  FCCLA is endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education (Office of Vocational and Adult Education) and the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS).  Missouri FCCLA works cooperatively with professional and community-based organizations, coalitions and state agencies to meet the many needs of members.

 

Staff

 

An executive director leads the organization and heads a national staff that gives direction to and carries out programs, communications, membership services and financial management.

The state advisor of Missouri FCCLA is employed by the Missouri Department of Elementary & Secondary Education and is a supervisor in the family and consumer sciences education section within the Division of Career Education.
