Four Missouri High School Students Selected as
Delegates in the U.S. Senate Youth Program
Two Missouri high school seniors have won a week-long, expense-paid trip to our nation’s capital as delegates in the U.S. Senate Youth Program. Each student also will receive a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies.
The delegates are:
- Sky Vanderburg, Moberly High School
- Christine Baugh, Lone Jack High School
The U.S. Senate Youth Program (USSYP) will be held March 4-11, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The Missouri students will assemble with 102 other delegates to learn about the functions of the federal government. Throughout their week’s stay, the delegates will visit the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court and Pentagon. They will meet with their senators and other national policy-makers.
The alternate delegates are:
- First alternate: Molly Jennings, Kirkwood High School
- Second alternate: Jordan Pauluhn, Lutheran High School North, St. Louis
The winners and alternates were chosen from among eight finalists. A panel made up of staff from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and The Missouri Bar selected the delegates. Nearly 90 juniors or seniors were nominated for the program this year by high school principals from public and nonpublic schools.
The annual program was established by the U.S. Senate in 1962. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation provides financial support for the program.
