Court Hearing on Wellston School District Postponed;
New Superintendent and Board Prepare for the Opening of School
A hearing concerning the Wellston School District, scheduled for today (July 7) in Cole County Circuit Court, has been postponed at the request of the former board of education of the district. A new date has not been set for the hearing.
The school district had requested a temporary injunction to prevent state education officials from taking over management of the school district. The takeover process began last week, when a special three-person board appointed by the State Board of Education met on July 1 to begin operating the district.
"We intend to move forward quickly to create a new management team for the school district and prepare for the opening of school on August 22. If everybody works together, we can pull this off," said Charles Brown, appointed by the State Board of Education to serve as the new superintendent of the school district.
The Wellston Special Administrative Board is scheduled to meet again at 4:00 p.m., July 11, at the Wellston School District’s main office, 6574 St. Louis Ave.
