Five Missouri Teachers Selected as
2005 Presidential Award State Finalists
Five Missouri teachers have been selected as finalists in the 2005 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching program, state education officials announced today.
The following teachers are among 253 state finalists for the prestigious Presidential Award:
- Patricia Avery, mathematics teacher, Rock Bridge High School, Columbia Public Schools
- Katharine Ferrell, science teacher, Summit Ridge Junior High School, Kearney School District
- Ellen Gott, mathematics teacher, Chillicothe Middle School
- Lea Ann Pitcher, mathematics teacher, Lee’s Summit High School
- Paula Young, science teacher, Francis Howell North High School
One mathematics teacher and one science teacher from Missouri will be selected next spring for the national award.
The national program was established by Congress in 1983 to identify and recognize outstanding mathematics and science teachers. The National Science Foundation administers the program.
A maximum of 108 Presidential Awardees are chosen to represent the 50 states and four U.S. jurisdictions. Recipients of the 2005 Presidential Awards receive a paid trip for two to Washington, D.C., to attend a week-long series of networking and professional development activities. Each honoree also will receive $10,000 from the National Science Foundation.
