Four Missouri Students Honored in U.S. Senate Youth Program
Four seniors in Missouri public high schools have been selected for recognition in the prestigious U.S. Senate Youth Program – two as delegates and two as alternates.
The two delegates receive $5,000 scholarships and a week-long, expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. Missouri’s 2007 U.S. Senate Youth Program delegates are:
- Rui Bao, Metro Academic & Classical High School, St. Louis
- Cort VanOstran, Joplin High School
Missouri’s delegates will meet March 3-10, 2007, with 102 outstanding students from across the country to learn about the functions of the federal government. During their week’s stay, the delegates will visit the Senate, House of Representatives, Supreme Court and the Pentagon.
The alternate delegates are:
- James Hunt (first alternate), Platte County R-III High School, Platte City
- Samantha Hogenson (second alternate), Macon County R-IV High School, New Cambria
The winners and alternates were chosen from eight finalists by a committee of staff members from the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Nearly 90 juniors and seniors were nominated for this year’s program by public and private schools throughout the state.
The annual program was established by the U.S. Senate in 1962. The William Randolph Hearst Foundation provides financial and administrative support for the program.
