12 School Districts Will Host "MAP"

Test-Scoring Workshops This Month
500 Missouri Teachers Are Participating

More than 500 classroom teachers from public schools across Missouri are working this month to score a portion of the thousands of Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) tests that students took this spring.

The first testing-scoring workshop begins this week (June 5-8); the second session will be held June 11-14.  Twelve school districts will serve as host site for the test-grading project: Columbia, Hazelwood, Liberty, Lindbergh, Macon, Raytown, Rockwood, Rolla, St. Joseph, Sikeston, Springfield and Webb City (see schedule below).

This is the seventh year the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education has conducted the summer MAP scoring workshops in collaboration with the test publisher, CTB/McGraw-Hill.

The main purpose of the MAP in-state scoring project is to provide professional development for Missouri teachers.  The teachers will spend the first two days training on the process before scoring students’ responses to the MAP items.  Each site will score different grade levels in the areas of math or communication arts.

The tests are scored electronically through a secure Internet connection to school computer labs at the 12 sites. CTB/McGraw-Hill will compile all of the data for every student and provide the results to school districts late this summer.

This spring, about 500,000 public school students across Missouri took the MAP tests in math at grades 3-8 and 10 and communication arts at grades 3-8 and 11.  Each exam contains multiple-choice questions, which are machine-scored.  About one-tenth of each exam, however, contains short-answer questions and “performance events” that must be hand-scored.

Teachers apply for the project, and their applications must be approved by their building principals. The teachers are required to have at least two years experience in teaching the subject area they score.  Each teacher receives a stipend during the test-scoring project.  Graduate credit is also available for teachers.

For more information about the MAP scoring workshops, contact: Michael Muenks, director of assessment for the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (573.751.3545).
