330 Top Sophomores Selected for Mo. Scholars Academy

3-Week Program Begins June 10 at MU

More than 300 top-flight students from public and private high schools throughout the state have been selected to attend the 2007 Missouri Scholars Academy which will be held June 10-30 at the University of Missouri-Columbia, state education officials announced today.

Opening ceremonies for the academy will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 10, in Jesse Hall Auditorium.  The keynote speaker will be Major Bryan D. Watson, a 1987 alumnus of the Scholars Academy who is currently serving as a military judge, stationed at Randolph AFB, Texas.  In this position, he serves as a trial judge for military courts-martial throughout the world.

Established in 1985, the Scholars Academy is a unique and intensive “summer school” for academically gifted rising juniors.  Every public and private high school in Missouri may nominate at least one student for the state-funded program.

This year is the 23rd edition of the Scholars Academy.  It is sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, and it has been hosted every year by the University of Missouri-Columbia.  Scholars live in university dorms for the duration of the academy.

Students who attend the Scholars Academy frequently describe the program as a life-changing experience.  They learn with a faculty and staff of 60 outstanding educators, and they are immersed with their peers in a rich mixture of academic, cultural and social learning experiences.

The students do not earn grades or academic credit.  They select one academic subject in math, science, social studies or the humanities for their primary area of study during the academy.  The students also have a full menu of co-curricular activities, lectures, workshops and guest speakers.
