Schools to be Recognized for “Positive

Behavior Support” Efforts

Thirty-five Missouri schools will be recognized for effective practices at the second annual School-Wide Positive Behavior Support Summer Institute to begin Monday (June 25). The four-day meeting will be held at the Holiday Inn Select-Executive Center, Columbia. More than 800 educators are expected to attend.

The institute is sponsored by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the University of Missouri-Columbia Center for Positive Behavior Supports. Training will be provided to school district personnel on strategies to use with students for prevention and intervention of problem behavior and maintenance of positive behavior. District teams are made up of administrators, counselors, and classroom and special education teachers.

Keynote speakers will be Dr. George Sugai, professor of special education at the University of Connecticut, and Dr. Tim Lewis, associate dean of the special education department at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

Heidi Atkins Lieberman, assistant commissioner for special education, will present the awards June 28 at 3 p.m. Each school will receive a certificate and banner. The schools and their awards are:
