Blue Springs High School Students Take Top Honors
In the "Missouri Personal Finance Challenge"

Teams of students from eight public and private high schools in Missouri competed last week in Jefferson City in the first-ever "Missouri Personal Finance Challenge." The event was held May 9.

Blue Springs High School won the competition; Parkway Central High School (Chesterfield) took second place. Ron Settle advised the Blue Springs team, and Tom Chambers advised the Parkway Central team.

The goal of the Personal Finance Challenge is to recognize teachers and students who are setting high standards for achievement in personal finance courses, which are a new requirement in Missouri’s public high schools. The competition consists of written questions followed by a "quiz-bowl" round of questions with verbal answers.

The other high schools represented in the state-level competition were Block Yeshiva High School (St. Louis), Bucklin, Fair Grove, Humansville, School of the Osage and St. Joseph Central High School. The four-student teams qualified for the state event by winning regional competitions held in Columbia, Kansas City, Springfield and St. Louis.

Members of the winning state team and their teacher each received a $1,000 savings bond and a trophy for their school. Members of the second-place team received $500 savings bonds. Teams also won savings bonds at the regional events.

This year’s regional contests were sponsored by A. G. Edwards. The state finals were sponsored by State Farm Insurance.

The Missouri Personal Finance Challenge is a cooperative endeavor of the Missouri Council on Economic Education and the Centers for Economic Education, which are located at the University of Missouri campuses in St. Louis, Columbia and Kansas City; Drury University (Springfield); and the University of Central Missouri (Warrensburg). The program is supported by the Federal Reserve Banks of St. Louis and Kansas City.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education supports the work of the Missouri Council on Economic Education.
