SUBJECT: NAEHCY Unaccompanied Youth Toolkit
LISTSERVE MESSAGE DATE: March 23, 2012
Dear McKinney-Vento Listserve Recipients:
I would like to share with you and providers serving homeless youth around the state a free resource available from the National Association for the Education of Homeless Children and Youth (NAEHCY). NAEHCY works with shelters, RHYA programs, and other providers of services to homeless children and youth across the country, to help students access K-12 and post-secondary levels.
NAEHCY recently completed an "Unaccompanied Youth Toolkit" specifically designed for shelters and service providers. The Toolkit includes a series of 1-2 page briefs that provide tools and strategies to help enroll unaccompanied homeless youth in school, support their success, access outside services, complete the FAFSA, and prepare for higher education. The briefs address such topics as:
-
Protocol for Enrolling Unaccompanied Youth in School
-
HEARTH Act Basics and Collaborating with Schools Under HEARTH
-
Access to Services Tip Sheets (Medicaid, TANF, Social Security, SNAP, shelter, consent for health care, etc.)
-
FAFSA Basics and Practical Tips
-
Strategies to Prepare Homeless Youth for College and Support Them Through Graduation
-
Training Resources
The toolkit is free and available to download at http://naehcy.org/tk/ssp.html.
I hope you will share information about the Toolkit with your networks and members. I think the information it contains will help all our service providers in their efforts to support youth who are homeless.
