NCHE will be offering the following webinars free of charge during the month of May:

Determining Eligibility for McKinney-Vento Rights and Services  Wednesday, May 16, 2012  1:00 - 2:30 pm ET (Please adjust for your time zone)
Webinar Description: In this interactive webinar, NCHE staff will discuss the McKinney-Vento definition of homeless, including categories such as doubled-up, awaiting foster care placement, unaccompanied youth, and substandard housing. Guiding principles to use when determining McKinney-Vento eligibility by the definition will be presented. Participants will be invited to discuss scenarios to apply the knowledge presented during the webinar.

McKinney-Vento 101: Knowing and Applying the Law  Tuesday, May 22, 2012  1:00 - 2:30 pm ET (please adjust for your time zone)
Webinar Description: In this interactive webinar, NCHE presenters will discuss the educational rights and protections provided to eligible students under the McKinney-Vento Act. Topics covered include:
Determining eligibility, Immediate Enrollment, School Selection, Transportation, Unaccompanied Youth, and Coordination with Title IA.   Participants will be invited to discuss scenarios to apply the knowledge presented during the webinar.

Supporting the Education of Unaccompanied Homeless Students  Thursday, May 24, 2012  1:00 - 2:30 pm ET

Webinar Description: In this interactive webinar, NCHE staff will review the main points of the McKinney-Vento Act referring to the education of unaccompanied students experiencing homelessness. Presenters will also highlight important points of other federal laws dealing with the education of unaccompanied homeless students, including IDEA and the College Cost Reduction and Access Act. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss best practices.

2012 NAEHCY Conference

The Request for Proposals (RFP) for breakout sessions at the 2012 NAEHCY Conference is now available. Visit the following website for instructions and the RFP: http://www.naehcy.org/conf/present.html

All proposals must be submitted online by June 15, 2012.  The NAEHCY conference will provide you with the opportunity to share what you know with your colleagues, and learn from them through the rich discussions that take place in the breakout sessions. We encourage you to submit a proposal and to invite others to do so as well. Also, lead presenters are entitled to a registration discount.

Topic areas include: Accelerating Student Achievement, Program Planning and Development, Early Childhood Education, Youth, Child Welfare, Federal Education Programs and Coordination, Evaluation and Research, Legislative and Policy Issues. We also need sessions that address urban, suburban, and rural contexts.

The 2012 Annual NAEHCY Award Nomination Packet Now Available.

Are you aware of an outstanding individual or school-based program working with children and youth experiencing homelessness in your community? Does your community have an exceptional media presentation relating to the needs of homeless children and youth?  To acknowledge your colleagues' contribution to the education of homeless children and youth, download the packet and nominate them.

Over the years, the annual NAEHCY awards have become an important mechanism by which we can recognize our colleagues for the outstanding service they have provided to children and youth experiencing homelessness.  Award recipients are selected through a screening and selection process overseen by a dedicated committee of state coordinators and other experts in the field.

The 2012 Annual NAEHCY Awards will be presented at our annual conference that will be held in Albuquerque, NM October 27-30, 2012.
