The Missouri School for the Blind will host a free training session on the Symbols and Meaning (SAM) Kit and the APH Intervention Continuum including the Sensory Learning Kit and Tactile Connections.  The workshop will be held in St. Louis on Thursday, November 7, 2013.

Millie Smith, educator, consultant, and author of the book, Teaching Students with Visual and Multiple Impairments: A Resource Guide will present this full day workshop.  The emphasis will be on the Symbols and Meaning (SAM) Kit, which includes the Sensory Learning Kit, Symbols and Meaning Kit, and Tactile Connections and the APH Intervention Continuum.  The APH Intervention Continuum provides strategies and tools for addressing the sensory needs of learners with visual and multiple impairments as they develop cognitive, communication, and social skills at three levels.  The Sensory Learning Kit addresses the skills needed for attention to and exploration of the people, objects, and actions that provide context for communication. The SAM Kit (symbols and meaning) addresses the skills needed for the late sensorimotor, early preoperational state where iconic symbols are used to label concrete experiences.  Tactile Connections addresses the skills needed for using symbols to communicate thoughts about abstract preoperational concepts.
